International Woman's Day - A Short Overview

International Woman's Day commemorates the struggle for woman's rights. It is a a day with great force behind it. So much so, that a woman's day in 1917 in Petrogrand sparked the Russian Revolution.

The earliest organized Women's Day observance was held on February 28, 1909, in New York. It was organized by the Socialist Party of America in remembrance of the 1908 strike of the International Ladies Garment Worker's Union.

International Woman's Day strikes were a catalyst for so much positive change. Not only for the equal rights for woman, but also, for the greater humanity. The 1917 Petrogrand strikes were for "Bread and Peace" - demanding the end of World War I.

In the backdrop of all the Woman's Day strikes lies the essence of woman and the good they give to the world in strengthening the relationship between people, and keeping the peace.

So, it is with good reason that the United Nations General Assembly and member states proclaimed March 8th the UN Day for woman's rights & world peace.
